Beyonce
If I Were A Boy
If I Were a Boy" is a song by American R&B singer
Beyoncé Knowles. It was written by Toby Gad and BC Jean and produced by
Gad and Knowles for her third solo album, I Am… Sasha Fierce
(2008). Alongside "Single
Ladies (Put a Ring on It)", the song was released as the album's
lead single to U.S. radios on October 8, 2008. The CD single was
released November 11, 2008. The song topped 11 charts worldwide, mostly
in European countries.
Up-and-coming singer BC Jean, who wrote most part of the song's lyrics,
took inspiration in writing "If I Were a Boy" out from a bad break-up.
Jean and producer Toby Gad were strolling in Times Square when the
former saw hot dogs that enticed her being peddled on the street.
According to Del Mar Times, "Jean was lamenting about how she was trying
to stay away from [it] and noted how if she were a boy, she could
probably eat one without regrets. That led to her musing on how if she
were a boy, she'd be so much better than her ex." Gad asked Jean to
"repeat her sentiments into a recorder". They returned to the studio and
wrote the song in 15 minutes. Jean recorded her version of the song.
Beyonce recorded her version after BC Jean's version was rejected by her
record company.
A Spanish version of the song titled "Si Yo Fuera un Chico" is included
on the version of the album sold on iTunes Spain. The Spanish version
has an official Music video edited from the orignal clip much like the
video for Knowles song "Irreemplazable". A remix has been released
featuring R. Kelly in which he responds to the comments made by Knowles.
The remix is set up as if they were having a conversation. There is
another remix with Lee Carr which confronts the song's theme from a male
perspective.
